17. When any police officer shall cease to hold and exercise his office, he shall forthw ith return all articl es belonging to the Force which have been supplied to him as otherwise he shall be guilty of a criminal offence in accordance with article 20. TITLE III OFFENCES Offences. 18. (1) Any police officer who - (a) being cognisant of any mutiny or sedition amongst the Force, does not use his utmost endeavours to suppress such mutiny or sedition; or (b) being cognisant of any intended mutiny or sedition amongst the Force, does not without delay give information thereof to his superior officer; or (c) being present at any assembl age tending to riot does not use his utmost endeavours to suppress such assemblage; or (d) deserts; or (e) persuades, procures, assist s or attempts to persuade, procure or assist any police officer to desert; or (f) knowing that any police officer has deserted or intends to desert, does not without delay give information to his superior officer; or POLICE ACT [CAP. 164. 9 (g) strikes, or offers violence to another officer, such officer being in the execution of his duty, shall be guilty of a criminal offence and shall be liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding two year s. (2) No police officer shall be found guilty of the offence of desertion unless the c ourt is satisfied that there was an inten tion on the part of such officer not to return to the Force.    Cap. 9. (3) The punishment provided in sub-article (1) shall apply unles s the fact constitutes a more serio us criminal offence under the Criminal Code or some other law, in which case such Code or such other law shall apply. Criminal offences.19. Any person who - (a) causes, or attempts to cause , or does any act calculated to cause, disorder or division amongst police officers; or (b) induces, or attempts to induce, or does any act calculated to induce, a poli ce officer to withhold his service or to commit an of fence against discipline, shall be guilty of a criminal offence and shall be liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year . Other offences.20. (1) Any person who refuses or w ilfully fails to comply with a direction given in accordance with article 17, shall be guilty of a criminal offence and shall be liable, on conviction, to impriso nment for a term not exceeding si x months, or to a fine ( multa) not exceeding one thousand and five hundred euro (€1,500) or to both such fin e and imprisonment. (2) Any person who through negligence fails to return any articl e in accordance with article 17 shall be liable to pay as a civil de bt to the Force the value of the article not so returned. False evidence on oath.
