76. If the master or owner of a Maltese ship does anything or permits anything to be done, or carries or permits to be carrie d papers or documents, with intent to conceal the Maltese charact er of the ship from any person entitled by the law of Malta to inq uire into the same, or with intent to assume a foreign character, or with intent to deceive any person so entitled as aforesaid, the ship shall be subject to forfeiture under this Act; and the master, if he commits or is privy to the commission of the offence, shall in M E R C H A N T S H I P P I N G [CAP. 234. 47 respect of each offence be liable to imprisonment for a period not exceeding two year s or to a fine ( multa) not exceeding five hundred units or to both such imprisonment and fine.
