Criminal Code (Cap. 9), article 367
367. (1) Every Court of Magistrates shall consist of a
magistrate and shall have a twofold jurisdiction, namely, as a court
of criminal judicature for the trial of offences which fall wit hin its
jurisdiction, and as a court of inquiry in respect of offences which
fall within the jurisdiction of a higher tribunal.

Magistrates.
(2) There shall be two Courts of Magistrates, one for the Islan d
of Malta and one for the Islands of Gozo and Comino to be style d
Court of Magistrates (Malta) and Court of Magistrates (Gozo)
respectively.
(3) There shall be a number of Magistrates to whom there shall
only be assigned the duties of the Magistrate as provided in Ti tle II of
Part II of Book Second.
