586. (1) Any person who is arrested for non-payment of the sum in which he bound himself, shall be detained for a period n ot exceeding one day for every eleven euro and sixty-five cents (€ 11.65) of that sum, whether such person is the person charged or accus ed or the surety: Provided that in no case shall detention for non-payment of the sum in which a person has bound himself exceed six months i f the amount is not higher than seven thousand euro (€7,000), one year if the amount is not higher than thirty thousand euro (€30,000), eighteen months if the amount is not higher than eig hty thousand euro (€80,000) and two years if it is higher than eigh ty thousand euro (€80,000). (2) If the person so detained has no means of his own with which to maintain himself, he shall be maintained by the Government, in which case he may be compelled to work like othe r prisoners subjected to work, and may be kept in any prison.
