71. If any person, in the case of any declaration made in the presence of or produced to a regi strar under this Part of this Act, or in any document or other eviden ce produced to such registrar- (a) wilfully makes, or assists in making, or procures to be made, any false statement concerning the title to or 46 CAP. 234.] MERCHANT SHIPPING ownership of any registered encumbrance or mortgage existing on, or the interest existing in, any ship or share therein; or (b) utters, produces or makes use of any declaration or document containing any such false statement knowing the same to be false, he shall, in respect of each off ence, be liable to imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years or to a fine ( multa) not exceeding five hundred units or to both such imprisonment and fine.
